Chaos in the Cloud: Why Google Drive Fails West Marches DMs — and What to Use Instead

Westmarches is a Tabletop Format that demands organization and clarity

Picture this: three Dungeon Masters, six factions, a dozen hexes, and thirty players scattered across the map.

They’re all trying to run a West Marches campaign together—ambitious, glorious chaos. But their “hub” is a shared Google Drive folder called something
like:

WestMarches_Shared_Lore_FINAL_(actual)_USE_THIS_ONE_v2

Inside? A mess of folders:

  • Session Notes
  • NPCs (old)
  • NPCs (new)
  • Maps > maybe outdated
  • Region lore – Matt’s version
  • Backup folders (don’t touch)
  • And of course… “Stuff to Sort”

The DMs are pinging each other constantly:

  • “Hey, do you remember what we called the tavern in Hex G2?”
  • “Did you update the goblin warlord’s name in all three places?”
  • “Wait, where’s the new version of the player map?”

Even worse, players are asking for documents that only one DM has permissions for. Or worse… someone overwrote the wrong file.

❌ Google Drive Wasn’t Built for West Marches

West Marches campaigns are different. They’re:

  • Decentralized
  • Asynchronous
  • Massively multiplayer
  • And deeply reliant on fast, accurate, accessible lore

Generic cloud storage isn’t enough. You end up with:

  • Broken links between locations, NPCs, and quests
  • Duplicate files from simultaneous edits
  • No meaningful way to filter, tag, or link lore dynamically

And when your world’s growing faster than you can document it? That system breaks fast.

✅ Enter: westmarchesgame.com

This is a tool built from the ground up for West Marches campaigns.

Instead of folders, you get:

  • 🌍 A structured way to organize files
  • 🔗 Organize PCs, NPCs, Maps, and more!
  • 👥 Role-based access: Players see what they should, DMs see everything
  • 📅 Timelines that actually make sense
  • 🔄 No more overwriting each other’s files

In short: westmarchesgame.com turns your Google Drive chaos into a living, breathing campaign database.

  • I’ve been passionate about computer programming since I finished playing my very first video game. You could say I was obsessed with computers after that. It wasn’t long until my parents got their first home computer. I learned how to connect to a dial-up modem to check email. Then I memorized the file structure of the Operating System. Then I took the computer apart to try and make sense what was going on. I was nine years old.

I spent my most of my teenage years learning how to make video games on the family computer. I was already taking college level programming classes before I graduated high school.

I spent my twenties working for many different types of companies, getting mentorship where I could and learning the business side of software.

Westmarches game is a passion project. I enjoy playing tabletop games with my friends and this software makes our games better. I plan on contributing to it and improving it for a long time. Learn More.
